He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?”

And when Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt.

Therefore, tell us, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a tax to Caesar, or not?”

Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.

They *said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He *said to them, “Therefore, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”

But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *permitted Him.

Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to reproach Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who strikes him down with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.”
