For while he lives he blesses his soul— And men will praise you when you do well for yourself—

Do not trust in oppression And do not put vain hope in robbery; If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.

Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, But righteousness delivers from death.

The crown of the wise is their riches, But the folly of fools is folly.

A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own delusion.

Do you make your eyes fly up to see it? But it is not there! Because it certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Be glad, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be merry during the days of young manhood. And walk in the ways of your heart and in the sights of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.

There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and have his soul see good in his labor. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God.

Instead, behold, there is joy and gladness, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”

¶Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue strong drink, Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!

¶Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field, Until there is no more room, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!

“Come,” they say, “let us take wine, and let us drink heavily of strong drink; And tomorrow will be like today—beyond exceedingly great.”

And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become rich; I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors they will find in me No iniquity, which would be sin.”

You who are glad in Lo-debar And say, “Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?”

Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net And burn incense to their fishing net Because through these things their portion is rich And their food is fat.

Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.

“But be on guard, so that your hearts will not be overcome with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap;

If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.

whose end is destruction, whose god is their stomach and glory is in their shame, who set their thoughts on earthly things.

But she who lives in self-indulgence is dead even while she lives.

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.

treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

You have lived luxuriously on the earth and lived in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

For the time already past is sufficient for you to have worked out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.

To the degree that she glorified herself and lived sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning, for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’

So he brought him down, and behold, they were spread over all the land, eating and drinking and celebrating because of all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.
