Then the men of Ai turned back and looked, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended to the sky, and they had no place to flee this way or that, for the people who had been fleeing to the wilderness turned against the pursuers.

But Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city ascended. So they turned back and struck down the men of Ai.

“And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived sensuously with her, will cry and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning,

And a second time they said, “Hallelujah! Her smoke rises up forever and ever.”

Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise from the city.

But the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, and Benjamin turned behind them; and behold, the whole city was going up in smoke to heaven.

Then the men of Israel turned around again, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that calamity had reached them.
