“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the cistern; and he will die right where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.”

Then King Zedekiah gave commandment, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard and gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city had come to an end. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take in your hand thirty men from here and bring up Jeremiah the prophet from the cistern before he dies.”

and Ebed-melech went out from the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying,

But I will deliver you on that day,” declares Yahweh, “and you will not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are terrified.

On the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine was so strong in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

All her people are sighing, seeking bread; They have given their desirable things for food To restore their souls. “See, O Yahweh, and look, For I am despised.”

They have silenced my life in the pit And have placed a stone on me.
