You have lived luxuriously on the earth and lived in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

From men with Your hand, O Yahweh, From men of the world, whose portion is in this life, And whose belly You fill with Your treasure; They are satisfied with children, And leave their excess to their infants.

Their eye bulges from fatness; The delusions of their heart overflow.

Better is a dry morsel and tranquility with it Than a house full of feasting with strife.

“The sacrifices of peace offerings are with me; Today I paid my vows.

“Come,” they say, “let us take wine, and let us drink heavily of strong drink; And tomorrow will be like today—beyond exceedingly great.”

But You, O Yahweh, You know me; You see me; And You test my heart’s attitude toward You. Drag them off like sheep for the slaughter And set them apart for a day of carnage!

“Wail, you shepherds, and cry out; And roll yourselves in ashes, you masters of the flock; For the days of your slaughter and your scatterings are being fulfilled, And you will fall like a desirable vessel.

Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had lofty pride, abundant food, and quiet ease, but she did not strengthen the hand of the afflicted and needy.
