Then Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites, who provided the people with understanding, said to all the people, “This day is holy to Yahweh your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law.

“Therefore my harp is turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.

My eyes shed streams of water, Because they do not keep Your law.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

It is good for me that I was afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.

Even in laughter the heart may be in pain, And the end of joy may be grief.

I said of laughter, “It is madness,” and of gladness, “What does it do?”

“With weeping they will come, And by supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk by streams of waters, On a straight path in which they will not stumble; For I am a father to Israel, And Ephraim is My firstborn.”

The joy of our hearts has ceased; Our dancing has been turned into mourning.

Blessed are those who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are those who cry now, for you shall laugh.

Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and cry.
