And Abraham answered and said, “Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes.

Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.

“I am a sojourner and a foreign resident among you; give me a possession for a burial site among you that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

“Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field;

So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be the name of Yahweh.”

‘Remember now, that You have made me as clay; And would You turn me into dust again?

“Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall behold God,

“Together they lie down in the dust, And worms cover them.

All flesh would breathe its last together, And man would return to dust.

‘How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!

For He Himself knows our form; He remembers that we are but dust.

Man goes forth to his work And to his labor until evening.

You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their spirit, they breathe their last And return to their dust.

It is in vain that you rise up early, That you sit out late, O you who eat the bread of painful labors; For in this manner, He gives sleep to His beloved.

My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.

All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive.

¶You turn man back into dust And say, “Return, O sons of men.”

A man who wanders from the way of insight Will rest in the assembly of the dead.

And I gave my heart to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous endeavor which God has given to the sons of men with which to occupy themselves.

¶What advantage does man have in all his labor In which he labors under the sun?

then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

All go to the same place. All came from the dust, and all return to the dust.

As he had come naked from his mother’s womb, so will he return as he came. He will carry nothing from the fruit of his labor that he can bring in his hand.

And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach and everlasting contempt.

The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven.

He who steals must steal no longer, but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

For you remember, brothers, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

For even when we were with you, we used to command this to you: if anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat.

And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
