Now all the people took note of it, and it was good in their sight, just as everything the king did was good in the sight of all the people.
Then an informant came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel have followed Absalom.”
In this manner Absalom dealt with all Israel who came to the king for judgment; so Absalom stole away the hearts of the men of Israel.
Then all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was still day; but David swore an oath, saying, “May God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun goes down.”
So all the people and all Israel knew that day that it had not been the will of the king to put Abner the son of Ner to death.
¶Surely men of low degree are merely vanity and men of rank are a lie; In the balances they go up; They are together lighter than a breath of vanity.
And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
