Now the Lord had caused the camp of the Arameans to hear a sound of chariots and a sound of horses, even the sound of a great military force, so that they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.”

“Sounds of dread are in his ears; While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.

There they are in great dread, For God is with the righteous generation.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help And rely on horses, And trust in chariots because they are many And in horsemen because they are very mighty, But they do not have regard for the Holy One of Israel, nor seek Yahweh!

How then can you turn away one official of the least of my master’s servants and trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

“Also her mercenaries in her midst Are like fattened calves, For even they have turned back and have fled away together; They did not stand their ground. For the day of their disaster has come upon them, The time of their punishment.

I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters as they went, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.

Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.

And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses running to battle.

And each stood in his place around the camp. Then all of the camp ran, and they made a loud shout and fled.

And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even the garrison and the raiders trembled, and the earth quaked so that it became a great trembling.

Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
