And this is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy would be the joy of you all.

What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?

And in this confidence I intended at first to come to you, so that you might receive grace twice;

But I call God as witness to my soul, that to spare you I did not come again to Corinth.

I have become foolish; you yourselves compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you, for in no respect was I inferior to the most-eminent apostles, even if I am nothing.

I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality which they have practiced.

For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I need not use severity, in accordance with the authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

For to this end also I wrote, so that I might know your proven character, whether you are obedient in all things.

So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the offender nor for the sake of the one offended, but that your earnestness on our behalf might be manifested to you in the sight of God.

I rejoice that in everything I am encouraged about you.

But God, who comforts the humbled, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it—for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while—

And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have often tested and found earnest in many things, but now even more earnest because of his great confidence in you.

I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view. But the one who is disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is.

And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.

Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say.
