And he said to him, “Far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without revealing it in my ear. So why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”

And they said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing.

¶Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.

He who divides the spoil with a thief hates his own soul; He hears the oath but declares nothing.

Lord Yahweh has opened My ear; And I did not rebel Nor did I turn back.

He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “May it never be!”

No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.

Far be it from us to rebel against Yahweh and turn away from following Yahweh this day, by building an altar for burnt offering, for grain offering or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Yahweh our God which is before His tabernacle.”

And the people answered and said, “Far be it from us that we should forsake Yahweh to serve other gods;

But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die, who has brought about this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people redeemed Jonathan, and he did not die.

Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he is seeking my life?”

Then Jonathan said to David, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have examined my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there is good feeling toward David, shall I not then send to you and reveal it in your ear?

Yet David swore again, saying, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, there is hardly a step between me and death.”

Now a day before Saul’s coming, Yahweh had revealed this in Samuel’s hearing, saying,
