Moreover thou knowest also what Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Ama´sa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Jo´ab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of As´ahel his brother.

But Ama´sa took no heed of the sword that was in Jo´ab's hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Jo´ab and Ab´ishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

And the man said unto Jo´ab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Ab´ishai and It´tai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Ab´salom.

And the king commanded Jo´ab and Ab´ishai and It´tai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Ab´salom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Ab´salom.

Then said Jo´ab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Ab´salom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeru-i´ah be too hard for me: the Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush; therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord.

Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Ama´sa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

And he conferred with Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah, and with Abi´athar the priest: and they following Adoni´jah helped him.

And Ab´salom made Ama´sa captain of the host instead of Jo´ab: which Ama´sa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Ab´igail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeru-i´ah Jo´ab's mother.

And there were three sons of Zeru-i´ah there, Jo´ab, and Ab´ishai, and As´ahel: and As´ahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

And Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbor secretly: and all the people shall say, Amen.
