And in the days of Artaxerx´es wrote Bishlam, Mith´redath, Tab´eel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerx´es king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

Then said Eli´akim the son of Hilki´ah, and Shebna, and Jo´ah, unto Rab–sha´keh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shim´shai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

Rehum the chancellor and Shim´shai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerx´es the king in this sort:

then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shim´shai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Di´na-ites, the Aphar-sath´chites, the Tar´pelites, the Aphar´sites, the Ar´chevites, the Babylonians, the Su´sanchites, the De´havites, and the E´lamites,

The copy of the letter that Tat´nai, governor on this side the river, and She´thar–boz´nai, and his companions the Aphar´sachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Dari´us the king:

Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerx´es king of Persia, Ezra the son of Serai´ah, the son of Azari´ah, the son of Hilki´ah,

And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerx´es the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

Then said Eli´akim and Shebna and Jo´ah unto Rab–sha´keh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

And now will I show thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Gre´cia.

Then spake the Chalde´ans to the king in Syriac, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.
