and his second, Chil´e-ab, of Ab´igail the wife of Nabal the Car´melite; and the third, Ab´salom the son of Ma´acah the daughter of Tal´mai king of Geshur;
And Ab´salom answered Jo´ab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
And it came to pass after forty years, that Ab´salom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Ab´salom! my son, my son Ab´salom! would God I had died for thee, O Ab´salom, my son, my son!
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Ab´salom.
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahin´o-am the Jez´reelitess: the second, Daniel, of Ab´igail the Car´melitess:
Ja´ir the son of Manas´seh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Gesh´uri and Ma-ach´athi; and called them after his own name, Ba´shan–hav´oth–ja´ir, unto this day.
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Gesh´urites, nor the Ma-ach´athites: but the Gesh´urites and the Ma-ach´athites dwell among the Israelites until this day.
Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Ab´igail; and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
And Ab´igail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
And David and his men went up, and invaded the Gesh´urites, and the Gezrites, and the Amal´ekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
