And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnez´zar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam, the son of Shaphan, ruler.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do after all that is written in this book.

Nevertheless, the hand of Ahi´kam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.

and said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Ba´alis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ish´ma-el the son of Nethani´ah to slay thee? But Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam believed them not.

Then went Jeremiah unto Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

And Gedali´ah the son of Ahi´kam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chalde´ans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
