Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath–she´ba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adoni´jah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as he promised, Adoni´jah shall be put to death this day.
and of all my sons, (for the Lord hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.
Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubba´al, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
