And there were more chief men found of the sons of Ele-a´zar than of the sons of Ith´amar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Ele-a´zar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ith´amar according to the house of their fathers.

And Shemai´ah the son of Nethan´e-el the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahim´elech the son of Abi´athar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Ele-a´zar, and one taken for Ith´amar.

And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.

Then came David to Nob to Ahim´elech the priest: and Ahim´elech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
