And Leah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name Reuben; for she said, Surely Jehovah has looked on my affliction, for now my husband will love me.
And it happened after Israel lived in that land, even Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine. And Israel heard. And the sons of Jacob were twelve.
And the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born; but since he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be counted according to the birthright;
These were the heads of the houses of their fathers: The sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi; these were the families of Reuben.
And the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations by their families, by their fathers’ house, in the number of names, by their heads, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, everyone able to go out to war:
