The Lord was like an enemy; He swallowed up Israel; He swallowed up all his fortresses and destroyed his strongholds; and He increased mourning and weeping in the daughter of Judah.

And he burned the house of Jehovah, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; yea, he burned every great house with fire.

Why do You hide Your face and count me for Your enemy?

And His anger glows against me, and He counts me as an adversary to Himself.

You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin.

All who pass by the way plunder him; he is a reproach to his neighbors.

And I will compress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and sorrow; and it shall be to Me as Ariel.

But they rebelled, and provoked His Holy Spirit, and He was turned to be their enemy; He fought against them.

And Jehovah said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before Me, My soul is not toward this people. Send them from My face; yea, let them go out.

So says Jehovah, the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war in your hand, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the wall. And I will gather them together in the midst of the city.

All those loving you have forgotten you; they do not seek you. For I have struck you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastening of a cruel one, because of the greatness of your iniquity. Your sins are many.

And he burned the house of Jehovah and the king’s house. And he burned all the houses of Jerusalem with fire, and all the houses of the great ones.

The Lord swallowed up all of Jacob’s dwelling-places, and did not pity. In His wrath He has broken down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He made them touch to the earth. He has defiled the kingdom and its rulers.

He trod His bow like an enemy, and set His right hand like an oppressive one; and killed all who were desirable to the eye in the tent of the daughter of Zion. He poured out His fury like fire.

And He spread it before me, and it was written on the face and the back. And written on it were weepings, and mourning, and woe.

And Samuel said, And why do you ask me, since Jehovah has turned aside from you and is your adversary?
