For so says Jehovah, We have heard a sound of trembling, of dread, and not of peace.

And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea; when one looks to the land, and behold, darkness! Distress! And light shall be darkened by its clouds.

We all of us roar like bears, and moaning we moan like doves. We look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.

These devastating have come on all barren heights through the wilderness, for the sword of Jehovah devours from one end of the land even to the other end of the land. There is no peace for any flesh.

The sound of the cry of the shepherds, and the howling from the leaders of the flock will be heard. For Jehovah is devastating their pasture.

And these are the words that Jehovah spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah:

Why have I seen that they are afraid and turned backward? And their mighty ones are crushed, and have fled for refuge, and do not look back. Terror is all around, a statement of Jehovah.

So says Jehovah, Behold! A people comes from the north country; and a great nation shall be stirred from the sides of the earth.

O daughter of My people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Make mourning for yourself, as for an only son, most bitter mourning; for the one devastating shall suddenly come on us.

The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan; all the land quakes at the sound of the neighing of his stallions. For they come and devour the land and its fullness, the city and those who live in it.

Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a distant land! Is not Jehovah in Zion? Or is not her king in her? Why have they provoked Me with their graven images, with foreign vanities?

For the voice of lament is heard from Zion. How we are devastated! We are greatly ashamed because we have forsaken the land; because they have thrown down our dwellings.

And I will turn your feasts to mourning, and all your songs into a dirge. And I will bring up sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head. And I will make it like the mourning for an only son; and the end of it shall be like a day of bitterness.

And he shall scoff against the kings, and officials shall be a scorn to him. He shall scorn every fortress, and he shall heap up dust and capture it.

For, behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, the bitter and impetuous nation that is going into the broad spaces of the land, to possess dwellings not belonging to him.
