Crashings fill the noisy city, the joyous city. Your slain ones are not slain by the sword, and not dying in battle.

Without Me they will bow in the place of the prisoners, and in the place of the slain they will fall. In all this His anger does not turn back, but His hand is still stretched out.

Is this your exulting city from days of her old age? Her feet bear her far away to stay.

Thorns and briers shall go up on the land of My people; even over all the houses of joy in the jubilant city,

for the palace is left alone; the crowd of the city is forsaken; mound and tower are instead caves, until forever; a joy of wild asses; pasture for flocks;

So Jehovah says this to the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, and not come before it with a shield, and not pour out a siege mound on it.

And the Angel of Jehovah went out and struck a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Assyria. And they rose early in the morning; and, behold! They were all corpses who died.

If I go out into the field, then I see those pierced with the sword. And if I enter into the city, then, behold, diseases of famine! Yes, both the prophet and the priest have gone around into a land that they do not know.

So says Jehovah, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the plague. But he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live; and his life shall be a prize, and he shall live.

And in the fourth month, in the ninth of the month, the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no food for the people of the land.

How alone sits the city that was full of people! She has become like a widow, one great among the nations; a noblewoman among the provinces has become a payer of tribute.

See, O Jehovah, and look! To whom have you done thus? Should women eat their fruit, children of tender care? Should priest and prophet be killed in the holy place of the Lord?

Those who are near and those far from you shall mock against you, O defiled of name, abounding in tumult.

This is the joyful city, dwelling confidently, the one saying in her heart, I am, and none other still is. How she has become a ruin, a resting place for animals! Everyone who passes near her shall hiss; he shall shake his hand!
