And the elders of his house rose up toward him, to raise him up from the earth. But he was not willing; and he ate no bread with them.

And Abraham said to his slave, oldest in his house, the one who governed in all that was to him, Please put your hand under my thigh.

And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him. And he refused to be comforted, and said, I will go down to Sheol mourning for my son. And his father wept for him.

And it happened on the seventh day, the boy died. And David’s servants feared to tell him that the boy has died, for they said, Behold, while the boy was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not listen to our voice. And how shall we tell him that the boy had died? And he may do harm.

And all the people came to cause David to eat food while it was yet day. But David swore, saying, So may God do to me, and still more, if I taste bread or anything before the sun goes in.

My heart is stricken and dried like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread.

Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; and diversions were not brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

And he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants broke him down, and the woman also. And he listened to their voices and rose from the earth and sat on the bed.
