And the Philistines set themselves in order to meet Israel, and the battle was spread. And Israel was stricken before the Philistines. And they struck about four thousand men from the battle line in the field.

Let us search and examine our ways, and turn back to Jehovah.

And they shall stumble each man upon one another, as if it were before the sword, when no one pursues. And you shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

And the Amalekite and the Canaanite living in that mountain came down and struck them, and beat them down, to Hormah.

And the sons of Israel have not been able to stand before their enemies; they have turned the back before their enemies because they have become a devoted thing. I will not be with you again if you do not destroy the devoted thing from among you.

And Israel and the Philistines set up in battle array for rank to meet rank.

And he stood and called to the ranks of Israel, and said to them, Why do you come out to set in order the battle? Am I not the Philistine, and you Saul’s servants? Choose one of yourselves, and let him come to me.

And the word of Samuel was revealed to all Israel. And Israel went out to meet the Philistines for battle. And they pitched beside Ebenezer, and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was stricken. And they each one fled to his tent. And the slaughter was very great, and thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.

And the people came into the camp, and the elders of Israel said, Why has Jehovah stricken us today before the Philistines? Let us take the ark of the covenant of Jehovah to us from Shiloh, and let it come into our midst; and it will save us from the palm of our enemies.
