And the men of Israel saw that they were distressing to them, for the people were distressed. And the people hid themselves in caves, and in crevices, and in crags, and in tombs, and in cisterns.

And David said, Because of this it is great distressing to me. Let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah, for many are His mercies; and do not let me fall into the hand of man.

But it is a people robbed and plundered; they shall all be snared in holes; they were hidden in houses of restraint. They were for plunder, and not one delivers; a prey, and not one says, Return!

And the pit there in which Ishmael had thrown all the corpses of the men, whom he had struck because of Gedaliah, was the one which Asa the king had made from the face of Baasha, king of Israel. Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

And the men of Ai looked behind them, and saw; and, behold! The smoke of the city had gone up into the heaven. And there was no power in them to flee here or there. And the people who had fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers.

And the sons of Ammon crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah also, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim. And Israel was greatly distressed.

And the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were troubled. For they had seen that evil had struck them.

And the hand of Midian was strong against Israel. And the sons of Israel made dens for themselves before the faces of Midian, in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

And Samuel rose up and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were found with him, about six hundred men.

And both of them were revealed to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, See, Hebrews coming out from the holes there where they hid themselves!

And all the men of Israel who had been hiding themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled. And they also pursued after them in battle.

And the men of Ziph went to Saul, to Gibeah, saying, Is not David hiding himself with us in strongholds, in the forest, in the hill of Hachilah, which is south of the wilderness?

And on the way he came in to the folds of the flock. And there was a cave. And Saul went in to cover his feet. And David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.

And the men of Israel who were beyond the valley, and who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled, and that Saul and his sons had died. And they abandoned the cities and fled. And the Philistines came in and lived in them.

And the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered to Mizpeh. And the rulers of the Philistines went up against Israel, and the sons of Israel heard, and were afraid before the Philistines.
