Why did the knees receive me? or why the breasts that I should nurse?

As a snail who melts, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

By you have I been upheld from birth: you are he that took me out of my mother's womb: my praise shall be continually of you.

Therefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive.

Yea, better is he than both, who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

If a man begets a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also that he has no burial; I say, that a stillborn birth is better than he.

Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this one has more rest than the other.

Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who are borne by me from birth, who are carried from the womb:

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent for interest, nor men have lent to me for interest; yet everyone of them does curse me.

Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.

Give them, O LORD: what will you give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
