And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall strike you with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Egypt.

He who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hinders.

But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict you; who have said to your soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and you have laid your body like the ground, and as the street, for them that pass over.

Now therefore, what have I here, says the LORD, that my people are taken away for nothing? they that rule over them make them to wail, says the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

You shall not rule over him with harshness; but shall fear your God.

And you shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your slaves forever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, you shall not rule one over another with harshness.

And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with harshness over him in your sight.

Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

Draw your water for the siege, fortify your strongholds: go into the clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brick kiln.

How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians afflicted us, and our fathers:

The same dealt craftily with our kindred, and ill-treated our fathers, so that they exposed their infants, to the end that they might not live.

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you into Egypt.

And the Egyptians mistreated us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage:

But the LORD has taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as you are this day.

And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
