For we ourselves were once senseless, disobedient, astray, enslaved to all manner of passions and pleasures; we spent our days in malice and envy, we were hateful, and we hated one another.

Once you were estranged yourselves, your hearts hostile to him in evildoing; but now he has reconciled you by dying in his mortal body,

Thank God, though you did serve sin, you have rendered whole-hearted obedience to what you were taught under the rule of faith;

Once you moved among them, when you lived in them;

but now that you are set free from sin, now that you have passed into the service of God, your gain is consecration, and the end of that is life eternal.

Be obedient children, instead of moulding yourselves to the passions that once ruled the days of your ignorance;

and he shouted aloud with a strong voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, now she is a haunt of demons, the den of all foul spirits, a cage for every foul and loathsome bird:

and by dint of the miracles he is allowed to perform in presence of the Beast, he seduces the dwellers on earth; he bids the dwellers on earth erect a statue to the Beast who lived after being wounded by the sword,

So the huge dragon was thrown down — that old serpent called the Devil and Satan, the seducer of the whole world — thrown down to the earth, and his angels thrown down along with him.

knowing as we do that our old self has been crucified with him in order to crush the sinful body and free us from any further slavery to sin

Sin is not to reign, then, over your mortal bodies and make you obey their passions;

Once you disobeyed God, and now you enjoy his mercy thanks to their disobedience; in the same way they at present are disobedient,

Some of them worm their way into families and get hold of the women-folk who feel crushed by the burden of their sins — wayward creatures of impulse,

Bad characters and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and deceived themselves;

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their deeds; they are detestable, disobedient, and useless for good work of any kind.

and it schools us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions and to live a life of self-mastery, of integrity, and of piety in this present world,
