When he went out to the gateway another maidservant noticed him and said to those who were there, "This fellow was with Jesus the Nazarene."

Shortly afterwards another man noticed him and said, "Why, you are one of them!" "Man," said Peter, "I am not."

He went and settled in a town called Nazaret, so that what had been said by the prophets might be fulfilled: 'He shall be called a Nazarene.'

But he denied it before them all; "I do not know what you mean," he said.

Again he denied it; he swore, "I do not know the man."
