The disciples inquired of him, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?"

if you care to believe it, he is the Elijah who is to come.

so they asked him, saying, "Then why are you baptizing people, if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the Prophet?"

They asked him, "Then what are you? Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" "No," he answered.

So they put this question to him, "Why do the [Pharisees and] scribes say that Elijah has to come first?"

They told him, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

He replied, "Elijah to come and restore all things?
