They replied, "John the Baptist, though some say Elijah and some say that one of the ancient prophets has arisen."

They asked him, "Then what are you? Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" "No," he answered.

others said, "It is Elijah," others again, "It is a prophet, like one of the old prophets."

And he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead. That is why miraculous powers are working through him."

So they asked the blind man once more, "What have you to say about him, for opening your eyes?" The man replied, "I say he is a prophet."

On hearing this some of the people said, "This really is the Prophet";

so they asked him, saying, "Then why are you baptizing people, if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the Prophet?"

In those days John the Baptist came on the scene, preaching in the desert of Judaea,

Now this came to the hearing of king Herod, for the name of Jesus had become well known; people said, "John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, that is why miraculous powers are working through him;"

Now it happened that while he was praying by himself his disciples were beside him. So he inquired of them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"

He said to them, "And who do you say I am?" Peter replied, "The Christ of God."
