Come, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.

And if we say, 'From men,' the whole of the people will stone us, for they are convinced John was a prophet."

And you, my child, shall be called a prophet of the Most High; for you shall go in front of the Lord to make his ways ready,

he was a burning and a shining lamp, and you chose to rejoice for a while in his light.

The Law and the prophets lasted till John; since then the good news of the Realm of God is preached, and anyone presses in.

Come, what did you go out to see? A man arrayed in soft robes? Those who are gorgeously dressed and luxurious live in royal palaces.

This is he of whom it is written, Here I send my messenger before your face, to prepare the way for you.
