Now in those days an edict was issued by Caesar Augustus for a census of the whole world.

After binding him, they led him off and handed him over to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Then the king rose, with the governor and Bernice and those who had been seated beside them.

But when two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and as Felix wanted to ingratiate himself with the Jews, he left Paul still in custody.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus.

However, on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in public to the delight of Herod;

Tell us, then, what you think about this. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Then came a holiday, when Herod held a feast on his birthday for his chief officials and generals and the notables of Galilee.

Just then some Pharisees came up to tell him, "Get away from here, for Herod intends to kill you."
