and when he was twelve years old they went up as usual to the festival.

Every year his parents used to travel to Jerusalem at the passover festival;

After spending the full number of days they came back, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know of this;

Then he came to Nazaret, where he had been brought up, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue as was his custom. He stood up to read the lesson

on reaching Galilee, he was welcomed by the Galileans, who had seen all he did at the festival in Jerusalem — for they too had gone to the festival.
