so the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill."
[Relocated to follow vs 2] Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus;
I reprove and discipline those whom I love; so be in warm earnest and repent.
Erastus stayed on at Corinth: I left Trophimus ill at Miletus.
As one of his disciples was reclining on his breast — he was the favourite of Jesus —
Whereupon the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" —
This he said, then added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; I am going to waken him."
Now there was a man ill, Lazarus of Bethany — the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
And when the Lord saw her, he felt pity for her and said to her, "Do not weep."
(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill was the Mary who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair.)
Said Martha to Jesus, "Had you been here, Lord, my brother would not have died.
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right: that is what I am.
