And Y'howshu`a rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of YY until the eventide, he and the elders of Yisrael, and put dust upon their heads.
The elders of the daughter of TZiyon sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Yerushalayim hang down their heads to the ground.
And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
When Mordekhai perceived all that was done, Mordekhai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Yhonatan his son, and for the people of YY , and for the house of Yisrael; because they were fallen by the sword.
Then all the children of Yisrael, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of Elohim, and wept, and sat there before YY , and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before YY .
(And the children of Yisrael went up and wept before YY until even, and asked counsel of YY , saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Binyamin my brother? And YY said, Go up against him.)
And they fell upon their faces, and said, O Elohim, the Elohim of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?
And Y'howshu`a said, Alas, O YY Elohim, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Yarden, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to Elohim we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Yarden!
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto YY , and I cannot go back.
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of Elohim, there assembled unto him out of Yisrael a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
