When Yoav saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Yisrael, and put them in array against the Syrians:
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
And Abishai, the brother of Yoav, the son of TZruyah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among three.
And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Yoav, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of TZruyah, Yoav's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
