Be willing to serve the people who have authority in this world. Do this for the Lord. Obey the king, the highest authority.

Remind your people that they should always be under the authority of rulers and government leaders. They should obey these leaders and be ready to do good.

My brothers and sisters, not many of you should be teachers. I say this because, as you know, we who teach will be judged more strictly than others.

So you must obey the government, not just because you might be punished, but because you know it is the right thing to do.

“It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You close the way for people to enter God’s kingdom. You yourselves don’t enter, and you stop those who are trying to enter.

They still come every day to worship me, acting as if they want to learn my ways. They pretend to be a nation that lives right and obeys the commands of their God. They ask me to judge them fairly. They want their God to be near them.

Then Moses said, “In the evening the Lord will give you meat to eat, and in the morning you will have all the bread you want. The Lord will do this because he has heard your complaining, which was against him, not us. What can we do? We do only what he tells us to do, so your complaints are really against the Lord.”

So one of you will ask me, “If God controls what we do, why does he blame us for our sins?”

All of you must obey the government rulers. Everyone who rules was given the power to rule by God. And all those who rule now were given that power by God.

People who do right don’t have to fear the rulers. But those who do wrong must fear them. Do you want to be free from fearing them? Then do only what is right, and they will praise you.
