Later, Jesus knew that everything had been done. To make the Scriptures come true he said, “I am thirsty.”

I am getting weak from calling for help. My throat is sore. I have waited and looked for your help until my eyes are hurting.

For this reason, I will treat him as one of my great people. I will give him the rewards of one who wins in battle, and he will share them with his powerful ones. I will do this because he gave his life for the people. He was considered a criminal, but the truth is, he carried away the sins of many. Now he will stand before me and speak for those who have sinned.”

They gave me poison, not food. They gave me vinegar, not wine.

My heart is pounding. My strength is gone, and I am going blind.

I gave you the message that I received. I told you the most important truths: that Christ died for our sins, as the Scriptures say;

When you turn away from them, they become frightened. When you take away their breath, they die, and their bodies return to the dust.

Again Jesus cried out loudly and then died.

Happiness is good medicine, but sorrow is a disease.

Even the most important leaders were quiet, as if their tongues were stuck to the roof of their mouths.

There are many who are dead and buried. Some of them will wake up and live forever, but others will wake up to shame and disgrace forever.

Babies are so thirsty their tongues stick to the roof of their mouths. Young children ask for bread, but no one gives them any.

I said, “What good is it if I die and go down to the grave? The dead just lie in the dirt. They cannot praise you. They cannot tell anyone how faithful you are.

then everything on earth would die. We would all become dust again.

Remember, you molded me like clay. Will you turn me into clay again?

Then Abraham said, “Compared to you, Lord, I am only dust and ashes. But let me bother you again and ask you this question.

You will work hard for your food, until your face is covered with sweat. You will work hard until the day you die, and then you will become dust again. I used dust to make you, and when you die, you will become dust again.”

Why don’t you just pardon me for doing wrong? Why don’t you just forgive me for my sins? Soon I will die and be in my grave. You will search for me, but I will be gone.”

We will all die some day. We will be like water that is spilled on the ground. No one can gather this water back from the ground. You know God forgives people. God made plans for people who are forced to run away for safety—God does not force them to run away from him!

“I am so thin, my skin hangs loose on my bones. I have little life left in me.

“Now my life is almost gone, and soon I will die. Days of suffering have grabbed me.
