But we can’t say John’s baptism was from someone else. We are afraid of the people, because they all believe John was a prophet.”

So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, John is a prophet. But I tell you, he is more than that.

The captain and his men went out and brought the apostles back. But the soldiers did not use force, because they were afraid of the people. They were afraid the people would stone them to death.

They said, “We cannot arrest Jesus during Passover. We don’t want the people to become angry and cause a riot.”

They wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid to do anything, because the people believed that Jesus was a prophet.

Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the people. They believed that John was a prophet.

But the Pharisees and experts in the law refused to accept God’s plan for themselves; they did not let John baptize them.)

The priests, the teachers of the law, and the Jewish leaders all talked about this. They said to each other, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from God,’ then he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe John?’

So they answered, “We don’t know the answer.”
