Luke 14:1

On a Sabbath day, Jesus went to the home of a leading Pharisee to eat with him. The people there were all watching him very closely.

Some Jews there were watching Jesus closely. They were waiting to see if he would heal the man on a Sabbath day. They wanted to see Jesus do something wrong so that they could accuse him.

So the Jewish leaders waited for the right time to get Jesus. They sent some men to him, who pretended to be sincere. They wanted to find something wrong with what Jesus said. (If they found something wrong, then they could hand him over to the governor, who had the authority to arrest him.)

After Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee asked Jesus to eat with him. So he went and took a place at the table.

You want only to destroy me, to bring me down from my important position. It makes you happy to tell lies about me. In public, you say nice things, but in private, you curse me. Selah

If they come to see me, they don’t say what they are really thinking. They come to gather a little gossip and then go to spread their rumors.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely. They were waiting to see if he would heal on the Sabbath day. They wanted to see him do something wrong so that they could accuse him.

They might tell you to eat and drink all you want, but they don’t really mean it. They are the kind of people who are only thinking about the cost.

The wicked are always looking for ways to kill good people.

There was a man named Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees. He was an important Jewish leader.

But one member of the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, stood up. He was a teacher of the law, and all the people respected him. He told the men to make the apostles leave the meeting for a few minutes.

Surely a man is more important than a sheep. So it is right to do good on the Sabbath day.”

A man with a bad disease was there in front of him.

Some of the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will God’s kingdom come?” Jesus answered, “God’s kingdom is coming, but not in a way that you can see it.
