People made fun of him, and even his friends left him. He was a man who suffered a lot of pain and sickness. We treated him like someone of no importance, like someone people will not even look at but turn away from in disgust.

You have let me see troubles and hard times, but you will give me new life; you will lift me up from this pit of death!

Now Johanan and all the army officers took all the men, women, and children and led them to Egypt. Among those people were the king’s daughters. My life is almost finished, like the long shadows at the end of the day. I am like dry and dying grass.

My people are hurt, so I am hurt. I am too sad to speak.
