When they heard this, they began to leave one by one. The older men left first, and then the others. Jesus was left alone with the woman standing there in front of him.

They show that in their hearts they know what is right and wrong, the same as the law commands, and their consciences agree. Sometimes their thoughts tell them that they have done wrong, and this makes them guilty. And sometimes their thoughts tell them that they have done right, and this makes them not guilty.

And you know that many times you too have said bad things about other people.

You say they must not commit adultery, but you yourself are guilty of that sin. You hate idols, but you steal them from their temples.

He looked up again and said to her, “Where did they all go? Did no one judge you guilty?”

Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.”

When Jesus said this, all those who were criticizing him felt ashamed of themselves. And all the people were happy for the wonderful things he was doing.

Defeat my enemies. Destroy them completely! They are trying to hurt me. Let them suffer shame and disgrace.

When you did these things, I said nothing. So you thought that I was just like you. But I will not be quiet any longer. I will correct you and make clear what I have against you.

People are trying to kill me. Please disappoint them. Humiliate them completely! They wanted to hurt me. Make them run away in shame!

Heaven will prove that he is guilty. The earth will be a witness against him.

Then the woman said to Elijah, “You are a man of God. Can you help me? Or did you come here only to remind me of my sins and to make my son die?”

You know all the bad things you did to my father David. Now the Lord will punish you for it.

Early in the morning he went back to the Temple area. The people all came to him, and he sat and taught them.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman they had caught in bed with a man who was not her husband. They forced her to stand in front of the people.

Then Jesus stooped down again and wrote on the ground.
