So Elijah went to Zarephath. He went to the town gate and saw a woman there gathering wood for a fire. She was a widow. Elijah said to her, “Would you bring me a small cup of water to drink?”

I will stand by this well and wait for a young woman to come to get water. Then I will say, “Please give me water from your jar to drink.”

Jesus answered, “You don’t know what God can give you. And you don’t know who I am, the one who asked you for a drink. If you knew, you would have asked me, and I would have given you living water.”

Later, Jesus knew that everything had been done. To make the Scriptures come true he said, “I am thirsty.”

Then the servant ran to her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.”

Jacob’s well was there. Jesus was tired from his long trip, so he sat down beside the well. It was about noon.

This happened while his followers were in town buying some food.
