Then I said, “But, Lord GOD, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a boy.”

But Moses answered, “Lord, the Israelites refuse to listen to me. So surely Pharaoh will also refuse to listen. I am a very bad speaker.”

“Lord GOD, with your great power you made the earth and the sky. There is nothing too hard for you to do.

But Moses, standing there before the Lord, said, “You know me. I’m a very bad speaker. How will I make the king listen to me?”

But I said, “Lord GOD, the prophets were telling the people something different. They were telling the people of Judah, ‘You will not suffer from war or from hunger. The Lord will give you peace in this land.’”

Then Moses said to God, “But the Israelites will not believe me when I tell them that you sent me. They will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’”

Then I, Jeremiah, said, “Lord GOD, you have tricked the people of Judah and Jerusalem. You said to them, ‘You will have peace.’ But now the sword is pointing at their throats!”

I was frightened and said, “Oh, no! I will be destroyed. I am not pure enough to speak to God, and I live among people who are not pure enough to speak to him. But I have seen the King, the Lord All-Powerful.”

Then I said, “Oh, but Lord GOD, I have never eaten any unclean food. I have never eaten meat from an animal that died from a disease or from an animal that was killed by a wild animal. I have never eaten unclean meat—not from the time that I was a little baby until now. None of that bad meat ever entered my mouth.”

He said to him, “Run and tell that young man this: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls, because there will be too many people and animals living there.’

So Jeremiah told all this message to Zedekiah in Jerusalem.
