Hagar gave birth to Abram’s son, and Abram named the son Ishmael.

But the other son of Abraham, who was born in the normal way, caused trouble for the one who was born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same today.

The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons. The mother of one son was a slave woman, and the mother of the other son was a free woman.

Sarai was Abram’s wife, but she did not have any children. She had an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

Jerusalem thinks back. She remembers the time when she was hurt and when she lost her home. She remembers all the nice things that she had in the past. She remembers those nice things that she had in the old days. She remembers when her people were captured by the enemy. She remembers when there was no one to help her. When her enemies saw her, they laughed, because she was destroyed.

Even children show what they are like by the things they do. You can see if their actions are pure and right.

Their constant insults are killing me. They never stop asking, “Where is your God?”

But I feel like a worm, less than human! People insult me and look down on me.

But they made fun of God’s prophets and refused to listen to them. They hated God’s messages. Finally, the Lord could not hold his anger any longer. He became angry with his people and there was nothing that could be done to stop it.

The messengers went to every town in the area of Ephraim and Manasseh. They went all the way to the area of Zebulun, but the people laughed at the messengers and made fun of them.

Some were laughed at and beaten. Others were tied up and put in prison.

“You mentioned Ishmael, and I heard you. I will bless him, and he will have many children. He will be the father of twelve great leaders. His family will become a great nation.

“But now men younger than I make fun of me— men whose fathers were too worthless to put with my sheep dogs.

Isaac continued to grow, and soon he was old enough to begin eating solid food. So Abraham gave a big party.

Get rid of the proud who laugh at what is right, and trouble will leave with them. All arguments and insults will end.
