Pharaoh sent people to see if any of the animals of Israel died. Not one of them died. But Pharaoh remained stubborn and did not let the people go.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh is being stubborn. He refuses to let the people go.

But Pharaoh again became stubborn and did not let the people go.

So God shows mercy to those he wants to show mercy to and makes stubborn those he wants to make stubborn.

“But Nebuchadnezzar became proud and stubborn, so his power was taken away from him. He was taken off his royal throne and stripped of his glory.

I did that because I knew you were stubborn. You were like iron that will not bend, with heads as hard as bronze.

Some people refuse to bend when someone corrects them. Eventually they will break, and there will be no one to repair the damage.

God is so wise and powerful that no one could oppose him and survive.

But the Lord made Pharaoh stubborn, so he refused to listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

Pharaoh still refused to let the people go, just as the Lord had said. Pharaoh refused to listen to Moses and Aaron.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Fill your hands with the ashes from a furnace. Moses, you throw the ashes into the air in front of Pharaoh.

“But I know that the Pharaoh will not let you go. Only a great power will force him to let you go,
