When Paul said this, a big argument started between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The group was divided.
But some of the people in the city agreed with the Jews who did not believe Paul and Barnabas. Others followed the apostles. So the city was divided.
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace. I came to bring trouble.
My Lord, confuse their words and stop their plans. I see so much cruelty and fighting in this city.
Paul knew that some of the men in the council meeting were Sadducees and some were Pharisees. So he shouted, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee and my father was a Pharisee! I am on trial here because I believe that people will rise from death.”
(The Sadducees believe that after people die, they will not live again as an angel or as a spirit. But the Pharisees believe in both.)
