Then King David went in and sat in front of the Lord. David said, “Lord GOD, why am I so important to you? Why is my family important? Why have you made me so important?

And I wonder, “Why are people so important to you? Why do you even think about them? Why do you care so much about humans? Why do you even notice them?”

Then King David went to the Holy Tent and sat before the Lord. David said, “Lord God, you have done so much for me and my family. And I don’t understand why.

But David said, “I am not an important man from an important family. I can’t marry the king’s daughter.”

You have been very kind to me. You did many good things for me. The first time I traveled across the Jordan River, I owned nothing—only my walking stick. But now I own enough things to have two full groups.

But Moses said to God, “I am not a great man! How can I be the one to go to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt?”

Samuel said, “In the past you didn’t think that you were important, but the Lord chose you to be the king. So you became the leader of the tribes of Israel.

I am the least important of all God’s people. But he gave me this gift—to tell the non-Jewish people the Good News about the riches Christ has. These riches are too great to understand fully.

But Gideon answered and said, “Pardon me, sir. How can I save Israel? My family group is the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh, and I am the youngest one in my family.”

Saul answered, “But I am a member of the tribe of Benjamin. It is the smallest tribe in Israel. And my family is the smallest in the tribe of Benjamin. Why do you say Israel wants me?”

Hezekiah received the letters from the messengers and read them. Then he went up to the Lord’s Temple and laid the letters out in front of the Lord.

Nathan told David about that vision. He told David everything God had said.

I ask you to please save me from my brother Esau. I am afraid that he will come and kill us all, even the mothers with the children.

Then Ruth bowed very low to the ground. She said to Boaz, “I am a foreigner, so I am surprised you even noticed me.”

“God made my family strong and secure. He made an agreement with me forever. God made sure this agreement was good and secure in every way. So surely he will give me every victory. He will give me everything I want!

All these things didn’t come from me and my people. All these things come from you. We are only giving back to you things that came from you.
