This is how it happened. In the past David fought against Edom. Joab was the commander of David’s army. Joab went to Edom to bury his dead soldiers. While there Joab killed all the Edomite men who were still alive.

He put teams of soldiers throughout Edom, and the whole nation became his servants. The Lord gave victory to him wherever he went.

And when the Lord your God lets you take the city, you must kill all the men in it.

But, God, it seems that you have left us! You do not go out with our army. So who will lead me into the strong, protected city? Who will lead me into battle against Edom?

God, you were angry with us. You rejected us and destroyed our defenses. Please make us strong again.

The Israelites fought the Midianites as the Lord had commanded. They killed all the Midianite men.

Then the Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite to become Solomon’s enemy. Hadad was from the royal family of Edom.

Joab and the men of Israel stayed in Edom for six months until they killed all the men of Edom.

David had defeated 18,000 Edomites in Salt Valley. He was famous when he came home.
