This is what God commands: that we believe in his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love each other as he commanded.

“I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other just as I loved you.

You have made yourselves pure by obeying the truth. Now you can have true love for your brothers and sisters. So love each other deeply—with all your heart.

This is what I command you: Love each other as I have loved you.

Jesus answered, “The work God wants you to do is this: to believe in the one he sent.”

Most important of all, love each other deeply, because love makes you willing to forgive many sins.

This is the teaching you have heard from the beginning: We must love each other.

God gave us this command: If we love God, we must also love each other as brothers and sisters.

We don’t need to write to you about having love for your brothers and sisters in Christ. God has already taught you to love each other.

Live a life of love. Love others just as Christ loved us. He gave himself for us—a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

Then a cloud came and covered them. A voice came from the cloud and said, “This is my Son, the one I love. Obey him!”

And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’

They said to him, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved—you and all who live in your house.”

And this is eternal life: that people can know you, the only true God, and that they can know Jesus Christ, the one you sent.

Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me.

Show that you are loyal to his son, or the Lord will be angry and destroy you. He is almost angry enough to do that now, but those who go to him for protection will be blessed.

Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worst of them.

But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God.

Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover festival. Many people believed in him because they saw the miraculous signs he did.

People who believe in God’s Son are not judged guilty. But people who do not believe are already judged, because they have not believed in God’s only Son.

My dear friends, I am not writing a new command to you. It is the same command you have had since the beginning. This command is the teaching you have already heard.

Anyone who says, “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God,” is a person who lives in God, and God lives in that person.

I write this letter to you who believe in the Son of God. I write so that you will know that you have eternal life now.
